Why Should I Have A Blog?
I am constantly asked “Why should I have a blog?” I have found myself explaining the benefits of blogging to a number of small business owners while I was having my hair done. I try to explain it in an easy to understand term: Google! Google loves blogs because of the fresh content and the links it can find within a blog. Blogs are also a great way to provide supplemental information like tips, how-to’s, sale items and more.
Susan Petracco has posted a great article Weblogs for Ecommerce Sites at DoublePlus New Media Marketing which is jam packed full of great information. Susan and her husband Pete Petracco of NetBlazon, have been part of the Miva Merchant community since 1999.
My blog application of choice? WordPress. While I prefer to install the application on a client’s server, you can setup a blog directly at WordPress.com. Be forewarned, it you set up a blog at WordPress.com to play with and have links to your store, Google WILL find it.
Another thing to keep in mind, if you don’t like the “canned” look of the default theme that comes with WordPress, there are hundreds more to chose from. But even better, WordPress is flexible enough that it can be made to look just like your store. Can you tell where the store ends and the blog begins on this site? Ignatius Productions. Most sites like to use the word “blog” as a link, this site chose not to. I think Google like that word too.
Upgraded to 2.7
Wow, now that’s different.
Reported Issues with Flock
Seems that some folks might be having problems publishing blog posts to a self-hosted WordPress blog using Flock. I haven’t had any issues “yet”, but I don’t use it much because I find it extremely limiting. Unless I am missing something, I can’t edit pages or links. It seems to only be able to post.
Running Updates
I have to run the gauntlet of updating to 2.6.3 for all my WP blogs that I have or maintain. Still need to find a fix for the WPG2 plug-in.
Playing With Themes
I tried on the new theme for a day. It was “okay”, but I’ve reverted back to the one I started this blog with. I need to decide what I’m really going to do with this domain name and this blog. It started off as a testing ground but I really haven’t had a lot of time to play around with things. I still have my personal blog at leslienord.com and I have Leslie’s Little Soapbox. The Soapbox uses Blogger, which is Google application. Google has added features to it, I think to try and keep up with WordPress.
I think I may just have too many blogs…
Flock Test Too
Flock has it’s short comings – it doesn’t let you edit pages.
Flock Test
Decided to try something a little different – Flock. I’m so used to logging into each individual blog, Flock will let me keep them all in one place so to speak.
Cruising The Themes
It’s been a while since I cruised through the WordPress.org Theme Directory, I like this one:
Desk Mess says it all. I’m thinking about changing my theme to this one.
My mission today is to find out why the WPG2 is no longer letting me insert images from a Gallery into a post. I’ve tried using multiple browser and I’ve posted to the support forum, now it’s time to follow up and find out what up.
I also need to find out how to make the “optionally below the link.” in the Add Link > Description work. I need it for a WP I’m tinkering with. I think I have too many blogs…
